Dr. Johnna Nynas, an OB-GYN at Sanford Health in Bemidji, joined News Director Larissa Donovan on the phone today to discuss a variety of women’s health issues.

Dr. Nynas emphasized that women tend to be the leaders of their households, and generally tend to everyone’s needs but their own.

She said ovarian cancer continues to be an enigma in diagnoses and one in seven women can contract it. Sometimes, symptoms include bloating in the stomach area while losing weight and a loss of appetite. Right now, the best way to screen for this type of cancer is through genetic analysis, especially for women with a family history of cancer.

One of the greats in Paul Bunyan Broadcasting News Director history, Kelly Stone, was lost to ovarian cancer in 2014 at the age of 52.

Routine cancer screenings include mammograms, which should begin at age 40 and be completed every one to two years, and cervical exams should begin at age 21 and generally be repeated every three to five years.
